Do you have fungal nails? Are you tired of having unattractive and discoloured nails? We can help. Research shows that laser fungal nail treatment, called Fungal Nail Laser Therapy, is 70% – 83% effective, providing a convenient treatment modality with no side effects.
What causes fungal nails?
The cause of these unsightly nails is fungal spores growing in the nail called dermatophytes, which feed of the keratin in the nail. This causes the nail to thicken and crumble, and eventually permanent loss of the toenail. The medical term is onychomycosis, and it affects over 10% of the Australian population — so if you have fungal nails, you aren’t alone!
Fungal nails are commonly contracted from swimming pools, gym showers, public areas, soils, contaminated footwear or by using nail clippers that are contaminated. For example, unsterilised equipment at nail bars and salons is a common cause of infections. Fungal nails can spread through direct contact from person to person.
How do I know if I have fungal nails?
Common signs of a fungal nail infection include a yellowish-white discolouration, lifting, thickening, crumbling toenails and occasionally tissue infections. Treatment and eradication of fungal spores is difficult, so early detection and treatment at The Perth Podiatrists will result in better success rates.
Fungal nail treatment options
Antifungal solutions.
The application of topical antifungal nail solutions daily for 4 – 6 months is an effective non-invasive treatment for fungal nails. However, please note that over-the-counter topical antifungal nail solutions, applied daily, do not penetrate the nail and have poor results. We supply a compounded antifungal nail solution that softens and penetrates the nail with much better results.
Debridement.
Debridement is a medical or surgical procedure used to remove damaged, infected, or dead tissue from the nail site. The goal of debridement is to promote the healing process by creating a clean and healthy environment for new tissue growth. Debridement of the affected nail or nails monthly — followed by a compounded antifungal nail solution — achieves improved success rates than with no debridement.
Oral antifungal tablets.
Oral antifungal tablets can be taken daily for three months to help with fungal nails. However, this may have serious side effects on liver function and health so we generally do not recommend this as a treatment option.
Nail removal.
Surgical removal of the nail or nails has the normal risks associated with surgery (such as minimal pain) but significantly reduces the risk recurrent of fungal nail infections.

How last fungal nail treatment works at The Perth Podiatrist.
The Fox or ‘hot’ laser uses thermal energy to penetrate the infected nail and produce heat at the site of infection to kill the fungal cells and its spores. Specifically, this involves passing a laser light around and over the nail until an adequate amount of laser energy has been applied to each nail, creating a warm feeling in the nail and nail bed.
Being completely pain-free, no local anaesthetic is required. There is also no recovery time or downtime required, and no side effects! The appearance of the nail will require several months to improve as the new nail grows out.
